Ball State University - Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology

The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology offer this program that will prepare their eventual graduates to identify and care for patients that deal with speech quality and fluency, swallowing disorders, and communication skills. They can also aid in cognitive and motor disorders, such as not being able to comprehend information or pay attention to others. Students with a background in this discipline should be able to complete the program within six semesters, while those needing additional foundational material will need around an additional two semesters.

56 credit hours are needed to complete the curriculum, and this Master's degree will help in the process of gaining licensure in the state, an additional license specific to education in the state of Indiana, and the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from the ASHA. The program offers an on-campus speech-language clinic that has licensed supervisors and the entire curriculum is taught by professional faculty members. Class sizes are low for more individualized education.

Indiana University - Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology

The College of Arts and Sciences in Bloomington has a higher education program with an option Bilingual track in SLP. For those holding background knowledge in the field, this program can be completed within two years with practicum sessions in four seasonal semesters. Students needing prerequisites will need additional time based on what they have already completed. The final semester will consist of an off-campus externship that culminates the program. Once graduates complete the clinical fellowship, they are eligible to not only receive the CCC through ASHA, but become licensed in any of the 50 states with this degree.

For those that are bilingual in English and Spanish, the speciality track is ideal and helps closes the gap of care needed for Spanish speakers in the country. Pursuing this version of the program will focus on serving the Latino community and clinical practicum experience will take place with Latino children and adults. In total, over the past three years, students that have been admitted into the program have held an average 3.87 GPA and quantitative GRE of 153. 95 percent of graduates completed the program on time, and all students have passed the national Praxis exam well above the score needed (184). SLP Licensure in Indiana

Licensure for speech-language pathologists is handled by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. An application packet will include instructions, checklist, application, and verification form.

In order to fulfill the requirements needed in the application, the applicant will need to submit fees, a photograph of themselves, official transcripts where the Master’s degree was completed (and any additional institutions if necessary), 400 hours worth of supervised clinical practicum, at least nine months in a clinical fellowship, and national Praxis exam scores. Any violations or malpractice must be documented and explained in full detail.

Holding a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA can replace the application needs for official transcripts, clinical practicum, clinical fellowship, and Praxis exam scores. All of those requirements are needed to obtain the CCC-SLP. There is a possibility to apply for both speech-language pathology and audiology, but the application process must be separate between them. All applicants must complete the jurisprudence exam once they have been approved, which covers regulations under the SLP statute, administration, and professional health.
