In-depth review of the top New York SLP programs, updated for 2024

SUNY Buffalo State College - Master of Education in Speech-Language Pathology

Between 57 to 60 credit hours are needed to complete the SLP major and Buffalo State College. Of the students that have entered into the program since 2015, nearly 95 percent have completed the program within the expected time frame of two years. All but two students have passed the national Praxis exam, and over 90 percent of graduates have been able to find employment within the first year. Clinical placements can be requested by type, but no specific arrangements can be made between the student and the potential opportunity. The curriculum culminates with a capstone project or a comprehensive exam.

In order to be administered into the program, students must hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a 3.0 GPA or higher. 25 credit hours of their prior curriculum should be in the field of speech-language pathology. Courses that must be taken at either the undergraduate or graduate level are three credits worth of behavioral science, biological science, physical science, statistics, and the following courses or course equivalents: Child Development and Education, Educational Psychology in Elementary Education, and Nature and Needs of Individuals with Special Needs. Submissions needed include GRE scores, a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation.

Hofstra University - Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology

Through the Health Professions and Human Services department, Hofstra offers their accredited SLP program that prepares their students for any line of care, be it at an educational institution, hospital, nursing home, or development center. The curriculum, which totals between 52 to 57 credit hours, includes topics on voice and swallowing disorders, developmental psycholinguistics, cognitive rehabilitation, and identifying issues and recommending treatment. There are two options to select with this program, one being a traditional pathway worth 52 credit hours and the other that goes toward a teaching certification with the following courses: SLP in the Schools, and Communication and Communication Disorders in Multicultural Populations.

Prospective students must meet prerequisites in order to gain entry into the program, including the completion of general education within liberal arts and sciences. Topics include arts and humanities, history and social sciences, mathematical and scientific processes, literature, and foreign language. These collection of courses must total at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Other submission needs include a 500-word personal essay, GRE scores within the last five years, three letters of recommendation, and there may be an additional interview.

Syracuse University - Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

At the College of Arts and Sciences, Syracuse offers multiple higher-education programs that are accredited by the ASHA and will prepare students for state licensure. While the college does welcome students that have a different background than communication science, those will need up to an additional year to complete the program. Otherwise, students can finish the degree in five semesters, with one semester dedicated to the summer.

Clinical work is generally completed in the central New York area with a network of options, but students with excellent academic marks can do a final externship outside of the local area. Examples of courses that are offered include numerous speech disorders such as stuttering and dysphagia, a broad look at typical student language disorders, and aural rehabilitation. SLP Licensure in New York

There are four objectives that need to be completed in order to receive New York state licensure in speech-language pathology.

1. Verified graduate of a Master’s program

First, they must complete at least a Master’s program in the field that has been verified by the New York State Educational Department.

These programs must have 36 graduate credit hours, and these courses must explore topics in SLP practices and various disorders to fully prepare professionals going into the field. All ASHA-accredited programs in the state fit this criteria. There should be at least 400 hours worth of supervised practicum during their program, along with 36 additional weeks of supervised professional experience. This can also be stretched out to 72 weeks for part-time workers.

2. For Audiology a Doctoral Degree is required

For those looking at licensure in audiology, the difference when pursuing a Doctoral degree is at least 1,820 hours are needed for supervised clinical experience.

3. National Praxis Exams

Regardless of pathway, an exam that showcases what the graduate has learned, like the national Praxis test. These can be taken at designated areas within the state.

A passing score for SLP is 162, and 170 for audiology. These scores will be available for 10 years from the location taken at, but can be verified by ASHA beyond the time frame. Those that have licensure in another state or country, the state of New York has the ability to sponsor the license if multiple requirements are met.

SLP Career Organizations in New York

New York has one of the biggest pools of job opportunities for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Achieve Beyond Pediatric Therapy and Autism Services

Achieve Beyond Pediatric Therapy and Autism Services specializes in helping children through speech and physical therapy and offers services throughout the entire New York City metro area. Speech pathologists will conduct screenings and advise family members on the options they have for their child. They will create progress reports for their patients twice a year and will maintain and evaluate all records to improve diagnosis and research methods.

New York Speech Pathology organization

With their clinic available 12 hours each day, New York Speech Pathology observes a variety of patients for speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. They provide coaching for their clients and can work with them off their location and through Skype when available outside of the NYC area, though coaching is different than correcting disorders and issues within speech and swallowing.

Therapy sessions are typically one hour each week with patients, with the exception being half-hour meetings for young children. Diagnosis of the problem is made immediately with a quick consultation on initial phone contact between specialists and patients.

Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center

There are more opportunities beyond New York City itself, as seen with multiple institutions in Western New York. The Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center looks for eligible SLP candidates throughout the area and they will also be treating school-age children for communication disorders.

They must hold a state license and certification by the ASHA for the position, and benefits include health and dental insurance, flexible paid time off, and further education can be pursued for free.
