SLP Licensure in New Jersey

In order to become an officially licensed speech-language pathologist in the state of New Jersey, there are multiple steps to take. All licensing is handled by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, who evaluates and distributes them, investigates any potential violation of consumer protection laws, and all renewals that must take place every two years. Renewals require at least 20 hours of educational credit in order to keep the license, which can be obtained through SLP associations in-state or nationally.

The first step in gaining licensure is obtaining a Master’s degree or pursuing a higher level of education. After the completion of a degree, a clinical fellowship is needed for at least a nine-month span for full-time workers. Similar to clinical practicums in the higher education program, these will need to be supervised by a certified SLP. Proof of passing the national Praxis exam is also needed, which can be taken at accredited facilities across the state. Finally, there is a required jurisprudence online orientation needed, which is free to take.
