Michigan State University - Master of Arts in Communicative Sciences and Disorders

The College of Communication Arts and Sciences offers the speech pathology degree that builds the skills needed to evaluate disorders, along with leadership potential in the health care sector. Prospective students should have an undergraduate degree in a similar field along with specific coursework that meets prerequisite requirements. Subjects include speech science, phonetics, hearing fundamentals, speech and language disorders, oral language development, audiological assessment, and rehabilitation processes. This will have to be completed if prior coursework in undergraduate study does not fulfill these needs. Applicants should submit transcripts, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation.

Students have the option of selecting two paths when completing the 51-credit hour curriculum. They can either complete a Master's thesis with an additional oral defense of the thesis, or they can select six additional credit hours of coursework that is approved by their advisor. Examples of courses taken in the degree include Language Assessment and Intervention in the early and late stages, Research Methods in CSD, and Motor Speech Disorders. Admission only takes place in the fall semester, and the cutoff for applicants in the upcoming academic year is on January 15th.

Wayne State University's SLP Masters Program

Through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students are able to pursue the Master's program in Detroit that will both make them eligible for the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the ASHA and state licensure. Those that are pursuing the program on a full-time basis should expect to complete the program within five to six semesters. The school provides over 40 different options to fulfill the clinical practicum portion of the program off-campus, as well as the clinic they operate at the Rackham Memorial Building. There is an option to complete a Master's thesis, a written essay, or a comprehensive exam when completing the degree.

In order to get into the Master's program, or to pursue the Doctor of Audiology also offered by the school, students must hold a Bachelor's degree in a similar field or have completed similar coursework. Submission requirements and recommendations for admission purposes include sending in official transcripts, GRE scores, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. AuD applicants will be invited to an interview on campus in February, a month after registration deadline for the upcoming year. Admission only takes place in the fall, and there is an option to defer to the next academic year if necessary.

SLP Licensure in Michigan

There are multiple background requirements needed in the application process toward speech-language pathology opportunities in the state of Michigan. They must complete a criminal background check and answer good moral character questions for those that have gone through a rehabilitation process. Training in identifying human trafficking victims must be completed beginning in the spring of 2021. Documents that hold verification of a prior license must be sent in with the application, and all applicants must have a social security number and obtained a Master's degree from an accredited university.

Michigan accepts certification by the ASHA, which is the Certificate of Clinical Competence within speech-language pathology, and it needs to be verified and documented. Another application pathway is to send official transcripts, proof that 1,260 hours of a clinical fellowship have been completed, and Praxis Series II exam scores. 20 hours of continuing education is needed prior to re-licensure, and if the license has lapsed for over three years, the national Praxis exam must be completed.

Michigan SLP Career Options

The University of Michigan does not have an accredited program by the ASHA, but they do have a health care facility, Mid-Michigan Health, at Midland. Among the types of rehabilitation services they offer is speech language pathology, and they have treatment for a wide variety of disorders, such as dysarthria, apraxia, dysphagia, and stuttering. Some of the new technology therapy that the facility uses is the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment that works on patients with Parkinson’s disease, and Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation that makes dysphagia treatment more effective.

Encore Rehabilitation Services is a localized health care provider at Farmington Hills that provides speech therapy for many across the state at the facilities they are partnered with. Full-time positions require a licensure from the state and a educational degree within speech-language pathology. Benefits for full-time employees include license reimbursement, health insurance, 401k retirement with company match, and paid time off.
