University of Maine at Orono - Master of Arts (M.A.) in Speech-Language Pathology

The University of Maine offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Speech-Language Pathology. The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Research options are available, and there is a thesis and non-thesis option. The full-time program extends over a 2-year period consisting of 5 semesters, for traditional students. It takes 6 to 7 semesters for students who need to complete a significant amount of prerequisite coursework. Part time students are not currently accepted.

  • Language Disorders in Children: Preschool
    This course examines the theoretical perspectives, contributing factors, special populations and basic assessment and intervention principles of working with preschool-aged children who have language disorders. There is an emphasis on language disorders in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication
    Students will learn about the needs of individuals who may benefit from using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). This course reviews the history of AAC, and the social communication theories which support evidence-based practice.
  • Current Issues in Aphasia, Right Hemisphere Deficits and Dementia
    A study of the pathophysiology and symptoms of Aphasia, dementia, and related disorders. This course provides a theoretical basis for developing assessment and treatment programs for individuals with these disorders.
  • Path to Licensure
    Students enrolled in the M.S. program in Speech Pathology must follow state-specific licensure requirements for the state they live in or plan to practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist upon graduation. Upon graduation, students are eligible for national certification through ASHA (CCC-SLP) due to the program's Accreditation with ASHA.

Admissions requirements:
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
2. Completion of 5 prerequisite CSD courses before or during the first year of the graduate program if the applicant's Bachelor's degree is not in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
3. Minimum undergraduate GPA of at least 3.25 overall
4. 3 letters of recommendation

SLP Maine Speech-Language Pathologist Licensure Overview

What SLP degree is required for licensure in Maine? Masters
What are the Maine SLP continuing education requirements? At least 10 hours of continuing professional education are required each year.
Maine SLP licensing information is available at ASHA.org. A post-graduate professional experience (Clinical Fellowship or “CF”) is required for state licensure in Maine and must be substantially equivalent to the requirements of a 36-week clinical fellowship in ASHA CCC requirements.

Individuals must be licensed by the state board as a Speech-Language Pathologist to practice in Maine. In order to be licensed in this state, the individual must meet the following requirements:

1. Possess a Master’s or Doctoral level degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an institution accredited by the Council on Professional Standards of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

2. Complete and pass the Praxis II examination.

3. A supervised clinical practicum

4. Completion of a clinical fellowship

The Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by ASHA is not required for Maine State Licensure. However, it is recommended because the nationally recognized professional certification is preferred or required by most places of employment.
