Loyola University Maryland Master's in Speech Language Pathology Program

Loyola's Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program provides students with the skills they need to become powerful and compassionate clinicians in a variety of settings. The 2-year full-time program consists of 5 consecutive semesters and is broken into distinct first and second year experiences. Students will spend their first year gaining clinical experience at the on-campus clinic and will spend the second year gaining clinical experience off-campus, amounting to a minimum of 400 clinical experience hours. Loyola has a 3 year employment rate of 100%, and on-time graduation and Praxis pass rates of 98%.

Coursework

Loyola University Maryland has a comprehensive course of study that encompasses all areas of speech-language pathology to educate students on the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with communication disorders. Some of these clinical areas include augmentative and alternative communication, voice and resonance, the impact of hearing on speech and language, swallowing, and the cognitive aspects of communication.

Path to licensure for the program

Upon completing all degree requirements, including 400 clinical hours, students are eligible to apply for a limited license in the state of Maryland. Upon completion of a clinical fellowship, full licensure may be applied for. Maryland does not require a certificate of clinical competence from ASHA to apply for a license to practice.

Admissions

Loyola University participates in the CSDCAS application service. The following must be submitted directly to CSDCAS: a personal essay, official transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, and the prerequisite course form. GRE scores are no longer being considered. The application deadline in February 15 for fall admission.

Towson University Master's in Speech Language Pathology Program

Towson University's Master of Science program does an excellent job preparing future SLPs by balancing their academic coursework with clinical experience. In the first year of their 2-year program, classes are balanced with on-campus practicum and in the second year classes worked around off-campus practicum placements. Towson prepares their students well, with 95% of students passing the national Praxis on their first attempt in the past 3 years.

Coursework

38 hours in required academic coursework and 5 courses in clinical practicum are required for graduation. Required courses cover topics such as Speech sound disorders, Fluency Disorders, Neurologically based speech disorders, Written language development and disorders, and Acquired neurogenic language and cognitive disorders.

Path to licensure for the program

Graduation requirements include 53 credit hours in required coursework, successful completion of a capstone activity (comprehensive exam or thesis), and demonstration of acceptable clinical and academic writing skills. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for state licensure.

Admissions

Both a CSDCAS application and a University application must be submitted by January 1 to be considered for admission. This includes a personal essay, 3 letters of recommendation, and official transcripts. Space is limited to 45 students per year. Applying students must have completed a set of prerequisite courses, or they will have to take them as part of their graduate program and extend their time to program completion. For the 2022 admission cycle, GRE scores are not required.

University of Maryland College Park Master's in Speech Language Pathology Program

University of Maryland College Park offers a full-time Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology program that exposes students to a diverse clinical population and roots training in evidence-based practice. In this program there is collaboration between research and clinical faculty and students receive high quality one-on-one clinical supervision. The University has its own in-house clinic with a variety of training opportunities, but also partners with multiple off-campus clinical sites to help broaden students' experiences. Furthermore, there is a 100% Praxis pass rate and 95% employment rate for graduates from the program.

Coursework

Academic coursework consists of 35 credit hours, with an additional 15 credits of clinical training. 3 semesters are spent training in the in-house clinic and 2 semesters are spent in off-campus externships. Academic coursework includes a combination of required courses, electives, and a final paper. Students who do not write a thesis must also pass a compressive examination.

Path to licensure for the program

Students must complete all 50 credit hours and pass their comprehensive examination to graduate from the program. Students who successfully complete the program may apply for state licensure, and upon completing their clinical fellowship may also apply for their certificate of clinical competence from ASHA.

Admissions

To apply to the MA-SLP program, you will need a completed application, a non-refundable fee, transcripts from all completed graduate and undergraduate coursework, a personal statement, a supplemental application form, and a resume or CV. All materials must be submitted by January 5, 2022 to be considered for fall 2022 admission.

SLP Licensure in Maryland

Speech-Language Pathology licensure in Maryland is managed by the Maryland Department of Health Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers & Speech-Language Pathologists. To qualify for full licensure, an applicant must be of good moral character, hold a Master’s degree in SLP, have completed a clinical fellowship, and have passed the national Praxis exam. In the state of Maryland, applicants do not need to hold their CCC from ASHA to obtain a license. New graduates will first get a limited license while they complete their clinical fellowship.
