SLP Rhode Island Speech-Language Pathologist Licensure Overview

Individuals must be licensed by the state board as a Speech-Language Pathologist to practice in Rhode Island. In order to be licensed in this state, the individual must meet the following requirements:

Possess a Master’s or Doctoral level degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an institution accredited by the Council on Professional Standards of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Complete supervised professional employment in Speech-Language Pathology under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist for a minimum of 30 hours a week for 9 months; or

Meet the standards for Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by ASHA (or its equivalent as approved by the board). To do this, the individual must take the Praxis, a national test in speech Language pathology from ASHA. A score of 162 on a scale from 100 to 200 is required to pass.

After applying for and receiving a provisional license as a Speech Language Pathologist in Rhode Island, an individual may apply to work as a Clinical Fellow (CF). Upon meeting the requirements for the Clinical Fellowship (which is 9 months), the individual may apply for state licensure and their CCC through ASHA as a Speech Language Pathologist.
