Francis Marion University Master's in Speech-Language Pathology

The Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) program at Francis Marion University offers a 2-year (five-semester) Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology for students who have a Bachelor degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or related areas. The program is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Council on American Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The curriculum is designed to prepare students with information and experience needed to obtain a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA. Students without a Bachelor degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders are required to complete 15 hours of pre-requisites in the area of Speech-Language Pathology prior to applying to the MSLP program at Francis Marion University. The pre-requisites for those students will take approximately 1 to 2 semesters (half a year).

Early Intervention for Infants and Toddlers: A Collaborative Approach
This course is offered for 3 credit hours during the Fall semester of a student's first year. It focuses on the evaluation and treatment of language disorders in children during the infant and toddler years through collaboration with other disciplines.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

This course focuses on the assessment and treatment for individuals on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. The course offers 2 credit hours, and is typically taken by students in their second semester of their first year in the program.

Craniofacial Abnormalities

The Craniofacial Abnormalities course is typically taken by students in their second semester of their first year in the program and offers 2 credit hours. It is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and experience necessary for assessing communication disorders in individuals with Craniofacial Abnormalities, such as cleft lip/palate.

Path to Licensure

Upon graduation from the MSLP program, students will have completed the academic and clinical requirements necessary for South Carolina State licensure in Speech-Language Pathology. Graduates are also prepared to pursue the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Admissions requirements

1. A Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Or, an undergraduate degree in a related discipline in addition to completion of pre-requisite courses.
2. A GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
3. A combined score of at least 380 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
4. A minimum of 25 clinical observation hours with an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist.
Application opens in September, and the application deadline is in May .
The most competitive applicants are invited to interviews, which are place over Zoom.

University of South Carolina Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MS)

The University of South Carolina offers two master's degree programs with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The Master's of Science Distance-Education (MS-DE) in Speech Pathology degree program

The Online SLP Program is designed for students with or without a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. It is offered part-time through distance learning. The program is convenient for students who are unable to attend full-time or in-person courses due to work or family commitments. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to work as a Speech-Language Pathologist with children or adults in a variety of settings.

The Master's of Science - Residential (MS-Res) in Speech-Language Pathology degree program

The MS in SLP is required to attend full-time status on a continuous basis for 2 calendar years. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to work as a Speech-Language Pathologist with children or adults who have a range of communication or swallowing disorders in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, and private practices.

Path to Licensure

Students enrolled in the MS- Distance Education program must follow state-specific licensure requirements for the state they live in or plan to practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist upon graduation. Both students who are residents of South Carolina and non-South Carolina residents are eligible for national certification through ASHA (CCC-SLP) due to the program's Accreditation with ASHA.

Admissions

Applicants to the MS in Speech Pathology degree program - Distance-Education and Residential, must apply through the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Services (CSDCAS) on the University of South Carolina Website. The application for the Master's programs is December 15.
Submission of GRE scores is optional. A GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required.

The University of South Carolina also offers a Doctoral program. Students in this program will pursue a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology. This program has rolling admissions and applications are due by January 15 to be considered for funding for the Fall semester. Personal interviews are required.

This course focuses on training in speech perception for children with hearing loss. Additionally, students enrolled in the MS in Speech Language Pathology at USC have the unique opportunity to receive extra training in the area of Auditory-Verbal/Cochlear Implants.

Neurocognitive Bases of Language Behavior

This course teaches clinical management of the neurogenic speech disorders. There is an emphasis on neuroanatomy and pathophysiology. Students learn the signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders such as stroke and progressive neurological diseases. Students in the program also have the unique opportunity to receive extra training in this area.

Augmentative Communication: Assessment and Intervention

Students will learn the assessment and intervention principles of working with individuals using AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication), also known as speech generating device. Historical perspectives and current issues surround this area will also be discussed.
